President Biden responded to the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel by issuing an executive order on Thursday, which focuses on Jewish settlers engaged in violence in the West Bank against Palestinians. The Times of India reports that the order establishes a system to impose financial sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals found responsible for attacking or intimidating Palestinians or seizing their property, as outlined by national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

Four individuals face sanctions under the order, leading to their exclusion from the American financial system, freezing of assets or property in the US, and a ban on travelling to the US. Officials have indicated that more individuals might be subjected to sanctions. The objective of the sanctions is to address the significant threat to peace and stability in the Middle East posed by violence from Israeli settlers against Palestinians.

Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, the head of the far-right pro-settlement party Religious Zionism, responded to the order by dismissing the “settler violence” campaign as an antisemitic lie intended to smear Israel and its settlers. The announcement of sanctions occurred just hours before Biden’s scheduled campaign event in Michigan, a key battleground state with a sizable Arab American population, which has been a focal point for protests against the president’s actions.
