South Africa is experiencing a surge in visa applications

South Africa is experiencing a surge in visa applications, with numbers rising by over five times compared to 2021, according to VFS Global sub-Saharan Africa head Hariprasad Viswanathan. According to The Citizen, this surge in visa applications is due to the high pent-up travel demand witnessed globally since the opening of international borders and the easing of travel restrictions.

Viswanathan also highlighted other global travel trends, including the rise of eco-conscious travellers seeking to travel sustainably, changing how businesses and locations operate. There is also a growing demand for personalised services prioritising safe and healthy travel, as travellers are becoming more conscious of their health and safety in the post-Covid world.

Additionally, artificial intelligence and machine learning will fundamentally change border management, enabling smart borders and contactless traveller experiences at international borders. Given the high demand for outbound travel, Viswanathan encouraged visa applicants to apply for their visas in advance and check turnaround timelines.

Limited appointment slots are available, and with the surge in demand for outbound travel in the initial part of this year, it is essential to apply for visas as early as possible. The surge in visa application volumes in South Africa reflects the global travel trend of pent-up travel demand.
