Tintswalo Safari Lodge: Luxury Beyond the Wilderness

But for Tintswalo Safari Lodge, situated in the heart of the Manyeleti Game Reserve, the true essence of luxury goes beyond the game-viewing experience. Founded in 2003 by the Corbett-Goosen family, Tintswalo Safari Lodge operates on a private concession within the Manyeleti Game Reserve, which is nestled between the iconic Sabi Sands, Kruger National Park, and Timbavati. The reserve spans 24,000 hectares, making it one of the most pristine and wildlife-rich locations in South Africa, home to 517 bird species, 336 types of trees, and ancient Baobab trees over 4,000 years old.

However, the true story of Tintswalo is not just about wildlife. It is about how the lodge has integrated its success with a commitment to uplifting the local community. This vision became a reality in March 2024 when Tintswalo launched its Abundant Village project, a community upliftment initiative that focuses on education and economic empowerment in the reserve’s 12 surrounding villages.

At the heart of Tintswalo’s community impact is its focus on education. The lodge’s partnership with Xinyeketi Primary School in Thorndale has brought about significant improvements in the school’s infrastructure. Under the leadership of principal Phicancy Siwela, the school now benefits from four new classrooms, fully furnished with desks and teaching materials.

This upgrade was made possible through donations from international partners, as well as Tintswalo’s own contribution. But the efforts go further. A Canadian donor funded the creation of a sustainable cooking facility at the school, providing the children with daily nutritious meals. This eco-friendly kitchen, built with natural hemp blocks, is paired with an enclosed chicken run that produces 40 eggs a week for the students’ meals.

Tintswalo’s work in the Manyeleti community is also centered around creating sustainable economic opportunities. The lodge has introduced an Entrepreneurs’ Day at the Manyeleti camp, where local artisans and farmers can showcase their goods to the lodges within the reserve. This initiative has resulted in fresh, locally sourced produce for the lodge kitchens, creating a self-sustaining supply chain.

In addition, Tintswalo has helped establish co-operatives that support local businesses by ensuring consistent delivery of their products to the lodge. The lodge’s curio shops proudly feature handcrafted Shangaan beadwork and woven baskets, offering local women a sustainable source of income.

Understanding the importance of skills development, Tintswalo Safari Lodge also offers hospitality training to the residents of Manyeleti. Each year, two local villagers are selected to undergo hands-on training in the hospitality industry, equipping them with the necessary skills to pursue a career in tourism. This initiative empowers individuals and helps build a sustainable workforce for the future.
