Joburg’s New Digital Dome: A High-Tech Adventure Awaits!
The Johannesburg Planetarium has evolved into the state-of-the-art Wits Anglo American Digital Dome, offering visitors breathtaking 360-degree digital shows. This R90 million upgrade, funded by Anglo American and Wits University, now makes it the largest digital dome in the southern hemisphere, with an impressive 8K resolution system.
“Visitors will feel as if they’re in the show,” says Dr. Moumita Aich, Head of the Digital Dome, describing experiences like space exploration or witnessing African wildlife.
A New Hub for Learning and Entertainment
The Digital Dome goes beyond traditional shows, doubling as a high-tech educational space for studies in astrophysics, earth sciences, and digital arts. Currently in its pilot phase, it will open to the public in February 2025. Visitors can expect programming that includes contributions from the Wits School of Arts and local creators.
