In a heartfelt announcement, Steven Kitshoff revealed his decision to retire from rugby at the age of 33, following a persistent neck injury. A Career Defined by Triumph
Kitshoff’s illustrious career spanned numerous high points, including two Rugby World Cup victories and a United Rugby Championship title. His retirement comes after a lengthy rehabilitation process following a neck injury sustained during a Currie Cup match for Western Province against Griquas in Kimberley last year. Despite undergoing surgery and putting in tremendous effort to recover, the injury ultimately forced him to make the tough decision.
Having started his professional career at the age of 18, Kitshoff earned 83 Springbok Test caps and played in 138 matches for the Stormers. He also represented Western Province, Bordeaux, and Ulster during his distinguished rugby journey.

A Legacy of Dedication
“Rugby has been my life from a young age,” Kitshoff said in a statement. “I was fortunate to live the dream of many young boys by representing the Springboks and the DHL Stormers. It’s incredibly disappointing for my career to end this way, but the risk to my wellbeing was simply too high. I gave the rehab and comeback my best shot, but it was not to be.”
Kitshoff expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his career, especially from his wife Aimee, his parents, coaches, teammates, and fans. “I will always be grateful to all of the coaches, teammates, and support staff at both the DHL Stormers and SA Rugby,” he shared. “I’m also looking forward to a new chapter in my life and will continue to support the team at DHL Stadium, just as I did when I was a youngster.”
