Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has rallied his team to bring confidence and belief to their clash against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Wednesday. Fresh off a 2-0 win over Angolan side Lunda Sul in the CAF Confederation Cup, Barker’s men are aiming to carry their momentum into this crucial league fixture.

Stellenbosch’s victory over Lunda Sul at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday boosted their chances of advancing to the knockout stages of the Confederation Cup. They now sit second in Group B with six points and need a win against Stade Malien this Sunday to secure their spot in the next phase.

“Chiefs is not Lunda Sul. It’s a different challenge, but we have to go into the game with an element of confidence and belief,” said Barker.

He emphasized the importance of maximizing opportunities in the league, especially since Wednesday’s game is their only league match in January apart from an away fixture against AmaZulu later in the month.

Barker acknowledged the challenge of juggling domestic competitions and the CAF Confederation Cup but noted that his players are thriving under the pressure.

“It’s exciting for us to be battling on different fronts. We may not have the experience of other teams doing that, but we are learning quickly. The players are enjoying the ride and giving 100%,” he said.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s decisive clash against Stade Malien, Barker called on South African fans to rally behind Stellenbosch as they represent the nation on the continental stage.

“I encourage you, media, to get the word out there. We are a South African team, carrying the flag of SA. A bigger crowd would help us a lot because it’s a massive game for us,” Barker appealed.

He expressed pride in the team’s effort and adaptability as they navigate the demands of international and domestic football.
