Greg King, a seasoned runner from Fourways, demonstrated that age is no barrier to athletic achievement with a standout performance at the 2024 Soweto Marathon. Competing in the great grand master category, King clinched a podium finish with an impressive time of 01:06:23.

King’s journey into the world of long-distance running began in 2014 when he tackled the Soweto Marathon’s half-marathon (21.1km) alongside his twin daughters. Now in his seventies, he has embraced a new competitive edge, excelling in his age group and inspiring others with his dedication.

“For me, running is about much more than the race,” King explained. “It’s a celebration of health, resilience, and community.”

To prepare for this year’s marathon, King adhered to a disciplined training regimen, progressively increasing his mileage and intensity in the final four weeks leading up to the event.

“I focused on strength, especially on uphills,” he said. “The key is building a strong foundation and paying attention to what your body tells you.”

King praised the electrifying energy of the Soweto Marathon crowd for playing a crucial role in his success. “The chants of ‘Go oupa, go!’ from spectators really fuel your determination,” he said.

Describing the 10km course as “very fair,” King highlighted its blend of challenge and opportunity. A gentle downhill at the start allows runners to gain momentum, but a long uphill stretch over the N1 highway tests mental endurance.

“The climb demands focus and grit,” King noted, “but it’s also where the spirit of the marathon truly shines.”

With a new grandchild on the way, King finds motivation in both his family and the younger athletes who share the course. “We’re not just running for ourselves,” he said. “It’s for our families, our communities, and to show that age is just a number.”

Looking ahead, King has already set his sights on the 2025 Two Oceans Half Marathon, where he hopes to share the experience with his daughter, Jessica.

“Running with family makes every step more meaningful,” he added.

King’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, community support, and the enduring spirit of competition.
