Sergio Perez has confirmed his exit from the Red Bull Formula 1 team after four seasons, marking the end of a challenging 2024 campaign. Despite having signed a contract extension in June to race until 2026, Perez’s struggles with performance this year led to his demotion to eighth in the driver standings, which ultimately saw him part ways with the team.

The decision came after ongoing discussions since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and Perez made the announcement on social media, expressing gratitude for his time with the team: “Thank you for these four years @redbullracing. I wish you the best.”

an official statement, Perez reflected on his time with Red Bull, saying, “Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience, and I’ll always cherish the successes we achieved together. We broke records, reached milestones, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many incredible people along the way. A big thank you to everyone in the team.”

Perez also thanked his teammate Max Verstappen for their collaboration and the fans who supported him, particularly the Mexican fans. “Never give up,” he added.

Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, praised Perez’s contributions over the past four years, highlighting his five wins, all on street circuits, and his vital role in securing two Constructors’ Championships. Horner also commended Perez for his exceptional teamwork and dedication, noting, “Checo will always be a treasured part of our history.”

While Perez’s exit was expected, there had been some consideration of him taking up an ambassadorial role with Red Bull, though it is understood that this option was ultimately ruled out.

Perez joined Red Bull in 2021, securing podium finishes and contributing to the team’s Constructors’ titles. However, difficulties with adapting to the RB20 chassis in 2024 cost him valuable points, as Red Bull slipped to third in the Constructors’ Championship.

With Perez now leaving the team, Red Bull is expected to promote one of its junior drivers. New Zealander Liam Lawson, who impressed in his limited appearances this season, is seen as the front-runner for the coveted seat alongside Verstappen. This move would likely lead to Isack Hadjar, the Red Bull junior and F2 runner-up, taking Lawson’s spot in the sister Racing Bulls team.

Perez’s departure signals a pause in his F1 career after 14 seasons, with no confirmed seat for him in 2025. Known for his breakthrough victory with Racing Point in 2020 and multiple wins with Red Bull, Perez will be remembered as a key figure in the team’s success.
