The Soweto giants used the tournament as a scouting opportunity and secured the signature of one of the standout young players on display, 17-year-old winger Rethabile Ramontoeli.

Rising star joins the Bucs

Ramontoeli, who dazzled with his flair and skill during the tournament, officially signed a two-year deal with the Buccaneers. He represented the James Mothibi Sports Development Academy and caught the attention of scouts early in the competition.

“There is an exciting player who has been signed by Orlando Pirates, and soon people will be talking about him,” a source close to the club said. “His name is Rethabile Ramontoeli… He is the next Relebohile Mofokeng, that one – I promise you.”

Former Pirates player James Mothibi is credited with discovering Ramontoeli in Bloemfontein and nurturing his rise. The youngster’s composure on the ball and attacking versatility impressed those in attendance.

More than just results for Pirates

While the Men’s Under-21 title went to Lerumo Lions and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies clinched the women’s trophy, Pirates made headlines by showing their long-term vision through smart recruitment.

“Rethabile was one of the most exciting talents at the 2025 Pirates Cup,” the insider added. “His development has been fast, and this signing shows just how serious Pirates are about the future.”

The Pirates Cup continues to prove its value as a youth development platform in South Africa. High-quality football and talent discovery went hand-in-hand once again in 2025, and Orlando Pirates walked away with a promising new addition to their ranks — a potential star in the making.
