Johannesburg’s Naledi Hlalele made history by securing a gold medal at the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. The 20-year-old figure skater was part of a six-member South African team that competed in figure skating and speed skating, earning an impressive tally of medals—including three silver and two bronze.

Hlalele, who attends Jiswa School in Lenasia, was overwhelmed by the moment of victory. “I thought they were joking when they announced I had won. But when it sank in, I started jumping and celebrating—it was the best feeling,” she said.

She and her teammates were met with a hero’s welcome at OR Tambo International Airport, where family and supporters gathered to celebrate their achievements. Hlalele’s journey in figure skating began through her school’s program, which offers ice skating lessons at Northgate Ice Rink in Johannesburg. Despite initial struggles on the ice, she quickly developed a passion for the sport.

“I can’t dance to save my life, but when I skate, I feel like I can dance. I love the ice—it makes me feel free,” she shared.

With unwavering support from her school, coaches, and family, Hlalele trained rigorously, ultimately earning her place on the world stage. Special Olympics South Africa chairperson Mathews Phosa highlighted the broader significance of the team’s participation. “This isn’t just about winning medals. It’s about affirming the rights of people with intellectual disabilities and ensuring they are included in society.”

Hlalele’s school also expressed pride in her achievement. “Her victory reminds us that with hard work and determination, anything is possible,” the school said in a statement.

As Hlalele prepares to complete her schooling this year, she plans to pursue her passion for beauty and skincare while continuing to skate. She also hopes to inspire young athletes.

“I encourage kids to stay focused on their sport. Be committed, disciplined, and believe in yourself,” she said.
