Michael Kernick Battles Mechanical Issues in Historic Formula Vee at HSSA GP
Michael Kernick, a racer from Sharonlea, participated in the final race of the Historic Single Seater Association Grand Prix (HSSA GP) at Zwartkops Raceway. He raced his grandfather’s 1965 Capital Formula Vee, the oldest car in the historic Formula Vee class. This race marked the first time Kernick raced the car since Sweden.
The weekend began with setbacks, as Kernick and his team rebuilt the engine only a few days before the race. After reaching the track on Friday for practice, further engine issues arose, limiting the car to just four laps. However, Kernick and his team worked overnight to rebuild the engine, ensuring the car was ready for Saturday’s HSSA GP qualifying.
Despite mechanical challenges, including a broken clutch pedal during qualifying, Kernick persevered. His team made a quick repair, and he managed to qualify second in the historic Formula Vee class.
In the first race, Kernick fought hard for the lead but faced power issues that slowed his car on the straights. He held onto second place, which he considered a solid result under the circumstances. Unfortunately, in the second race, Kernick was forced to retire on the last lap due to engine problems.
Although disappointed by the engine failure, Kernick remains focused and determined. “This is all part of racing,” he said. He and his team are now looking ahead to the Kyalami 9-Hour, where Kernick will race a Backdraft Roadster. Excited about this new challenge, he is eager to come back stronger after the HSSA GP experience.
