Lifa Hlongwa overcomes his disability

Lifa Hlongwa overcomes his disability daily and fiercely rows his boat towards victory.

The para-rower recently showcased his remarkable talent at the International Para-Rowing Regatta in Italy in June. Despite facing tough competition, Hlongwa secured an impressive fourth position, surpassing his previous participation in the race, where he finished 14th in 2022.

He was injured in a rugby match about six years ago, which changed his life. Hlongwa was hit by a tackle that dislocated and fractured his sixth and seventh vertebrae, leaving him paralyzed. He faced the daily battle of coming to terms with his disability. However, Hlongwa maintained a steadfast belief that he was greater than his injury and capable of overcoming any obstacle.

For Hlongwa, stepping into a boat for the first time was a transformative experience. He described it as amazing and has since honed his rowing skills, even navigating near ships and yachts. Initially drawn to the sport for its rehabilitative qualities and the opportunity to stay physically fit, Hlongwa began training at the Durban Rowing Club and has been an integral part of the UJ Rowing Club for approximately four years.

Rowing has given Hlongwa a fresh perspective on hard work, self-motivation, and discipline. These qualities will undoubtedly propel him towards his ultimate goal of participating in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. He is diligently preparing for the Olympic qualifiers scheduled later this year. Among the many competitions he has participated in, one that stands out is the regatta from last year. It marked his first racing experience overseas, where he showcased his skills among the world’s best rowers, making it an exhilarating moment.

While Hlongwa has experienced triumphs and disappointments, he views each day as an opportunity to start anew and strive for personal growth. He firmly believes that life offers no easy paths, and how one seizes opportunities determines their journey. Hlongwa hopes to inspire others not to give up on their pursuits and to persevere in pursuing their passions.

Addressing fellow sportsmen and women, Hlongwa acknowledges that some days may not go as planned, and challenges may make training difficult. However, he highlights that these are the most crucial days for personal growth and overcoming obstacles. He encourages proper preparation, as it leads to opportunities and, ultimately, rewards. With an unwavering spirit, Hlongwa urges everyone to work hard, work smart, and embrace the journey ahead.
