Former Kaizer Chiefs Star Willard Katsande Criticizes Lack of Leadership Amid Club’s Struggles

Kaizer Chiefs’ former midfield stalwart, Willard Katsande, has voiced concerns over the lack of leadership within the squad as the club endures another challenging Betway Premiership campaign.

Amakhosi are striving to recover from last season’s historic disappointment, where they ended 10th in the league standings — the worst finish in the club’s PSL history. Despite aiming to rebuild, their progress this season has been underwhelming, sitting sixth on the log with 11 points from seven matches.

In their latest encounter, Chiefs let a 2-0 lead slip against Royal AM at Polokwane Stadium, settling for a draw. Coach Nasreddine Nabi did not hold back, criticizing the players for a “lack of professionalism.”

Speaking to FarPost, Katsande shared similar sentiments, emphasizing that the team needs players who can lead by example, especially during high-pressure moments.

“They need a hard man in midfield and a striker. However, there is also a lack of leaders. You need people who can keep the heads cool,” said Katsande.

Katsande believes that Nabi, who joined Chiefs this season, requires time to implement his vision fully. He estimates that it may take four transfer windows to overhaul the squad and establish a winning culture.

“I think Chiefs need at least four transfer windows under Nabi because there are some encouraging signs,” he said. “I don’t think the coach was wrong to say there was a lack of professionalism. At least he didn’t single out certain departments. He spoke about the whole team and knows that they should have done better.”

Kaizer Chiefs fans are hopeful the club can regain its former glory, but Katsande’s remarks underline the urgent need for strong leaders and strategic reinforcements. Whether Nabi’s long-term approach can deliver results remains to be seen.

For now, Amakhosi face mounting pressure to improve their performance and reclaim their place among South African football’s elite.
