Lions Secure Rising Star Henco van Wyk on a Long-Term Contract

In a move that further strengthens their squad, the Lions have secured a key signing in the form of talented centre Henco van Wyk. The 23-year-old has committed to the Johannesburg franchise until 2027, continuing his promising journey with the team.
Van Wyk’s journey with the Lions began in April 2022 when he made his debut in the United Rugby Championship against Edinburgh. Since then, he has become a standout player, known for his powerful running and defensive prowess. The former Junior Springbok has shown immense potential and has quickly gained recognition in South African rugby.

Despite a knee injury that kept him from making his Springbok debut, Van Wyk was included in the national team’s alignment camps last year, showcasing his international potential. His injury struggles, however, have limited his appearances since 2023. Should he remain injury-free and continue delivering strong performances, Van Wyk is likely to be considered for a spot in the back-to-back World Champion squad.
Reflecting on his contract extension, Van Wyk shared his excitement about the future with the Lions: “I’m really excited for what lies ahead with the Lions. A massive thank you for the opportunity and belief in me to do what I love. Above all, I give thanks to our Heavenly Father for His grace and guidance.”
With Van Wyk re-signing for the next few years, the Lions continue to build a squad that is well-positioned for success in the coming seasons. The franchise’s strategic moves to retain young, talented players indicate their long-term vision and commitment to competitiveness in the United Rugby Championship.
