bowler is out to make Wattville proud

A bowler is out to make Wattville proud as he secures a spot in the national squad for the upcoming ICC U19 World Cup, starting on January 19. The ecstatic Martin Khumalo, who received the news via SMS, couldn’t contain his joy, screaming in celebration and attracting curious neighbours. Born and raised in Wattville, he sees his achievement as a victory for township cricketers, overcoming challenges like practising on tennis courts to enhance their skills.

Hailing from Wattville Cricket Club, where he improvised with a cone as stumps due to limited facilities, Khumalo’s talent was later noticed when he joined Actonville Spurs CC. Playing for Eastern’s provincial side at 16, he caught the attention of SA scouts during a provincial match. Although setbacks like a back injury and missing out on the Bangladesh tour occurred, Khumalo’s perseverance paid off, earning him a spot in the U19 World Cup squad.

Acknowledging the support from Wattville, Actonville, and Eastern Cricket Union, Khumalo expressed gratitude and urged continued support. With noteworthy performances, including a fifer in a warm-up match against Zimbabwe, he aims to make his community proud. South Africa’s U19 team, including Khumalo, is set to face the West Indies in their opening fixture at JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom.
