Blitzboks End Nine-Year Wait for Cape Town Sevens Victory, Beat France 26-14
The Blitzboks ended a nine-year wait for a Cape Town Sevens victory on Sunday, defeating France 26-14 in the final to lift the prestigious trophy for the first time since 2015. The win was a much-needed relief for coach Philip Snyman, who praised his players’ dedication and performance.
“It’s really great to see the players enjoy this win,” Snyman said after the match. “They are the real heroes of this weekend. They played for every member of our squad who couldn’t be on the field tonight.”
Snyman expressed pride in his squad’s work ethic, especially after they had fallen short in the season-opening tournament in Dubai, where they finished sixth. He noted, “We wanted to apply more pressure on defence, play from turnover ball, and ensure we get the ball to our playmakers as soon as possible.”
The Blitzboks’ defense was exceptional throughout the tournament, conceding only two tries on the first day. Despite slow starts in the semi-final and final, the team showed tremendous character, bouncing back to secure victory in both games.
“Our plans were executed perfectly this weekend,” Snyman added. “The players showed what we’re capable of, and they really played very well.”
The win pushed the Blitzboks to third place in the new series standings, and the victory was celebrated by fans and supporters, including Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, who was present at the Cape Town Stadium.
