Former Springbok Andre Snyman Faces Tumour Battle: GoFundMe Set Up for Support
Johannesburg, December 13, 2024 – Andre Snyman, the former Springbok centre, is facing a tough fight against a debilitating tumour that has greatly impacted his life. Known for his remarkable speed and agility on the rugby field, Snyman, now 50 years old, was diagnosed with a vestibular schwannoma, also known as an acoustic neuroma, in October. This tumour, which grows in the ear canal, is affecting his balance, preventing him from driving and moving freely.
To help alleviate the financial strain caused by this unexpected health crisis, a GoFundMe page has been created, encouraging support from his family, friends, and rugby community. According to the fundraising page, Snyman is preparing for surgery in January to remove the tumour. Recovery is expected to take three months, and the funds raised will assist with both his medical expenses and immediate living costs during this challenging time.
Snyman, who currently resides in the United States and coaches the girls’ rugby team at Valor Christian High School, made a significant impact on the rugby world. He played 38 Tests for the Springboks between 1996 and 2006, earning recognition for his exceptional pace and ability to exploit gaps on the field. Throughout his career, Snyman also represented local teams, including the Bulls and Sharks, and had stints playing in England and France.
As he prepares for surgery, Snyman and his family are navigating the complex medical and non-medical challenges associated with his condition. The GoFundMe page aims to provide much-needed relief during this trying period, enabling him to focus on his recovery.
“While the recovery time is expected to be three months post-surgery, there are immediate challenges that Andre and his family are navigating—both medical and non-medical,” reads the GoFundMe description. “To help alleviate the added pressure of this unexpected health crisis, I have created this GoFundMe so that friends, members of the rugby community, colleagues, and those who feel so inclined are able to aid in his immediate time of need and post-surgery recovery.”
Snyman’s condition serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life, even for those who once dominated on the field. As he faces this battle, the rugby community and fans are rallying around him, hoping to provide support in his time of need.
