South Africa Mourns the Loss of Activist and Writer, Zoleka Mandela

Zoleka Mandela passed away yesterday, 25 September 2023. The prominent activist and talented writer passed on at the age of 43. Her battle with cancer was marked by extraordinary courage, and her loved ones surrounded her in her final hours.

Zoleka, the granddaughter of the legendary Nelson Mandela, fought a relentless war against metastatic cancer that had invaded her hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain, and spinal cord. Her journey in this battle saw her admitted to the hospital for ongoing treatment on 18 September.

Recent medical evaluations unveiled her condition’s grim progression, including lung fibrosis and multiple emboli. The family’s spokesperson, Zwelabo Mandela, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the tireless medical team that cared for Zoleka during her arduous fight.

Zoleka Mandela’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of her family, close friends and the broader South African community. Her enduring legacy as an activist and writer will serve as a perennial source of inspiration, ensuring that her spirit lives on in literature and social justice.
