Consulate: No Free Transport for SA-Based Zimbabweans’ in Elections
The Consulate of Zimbabwe in Johannesburg has refuted reports claiming that it will offer transportation to Zimbabweans who wish to vote in the August 23 2023, elections.
Last week, Eria Phiri, the Zimbabwe consul-general in Johannesburg, was cited by EWN for allegedly stating that the embassy would assist citizens in exercising their democratic voting rights as reported by Pindula.

However, Phiri has denied ever making such a commitment, clarifying that the Government of Zimbabwe’s assistance was solely provided to support citizens affected by the tragic Boksburg gas leak incident. As quoted by IOL, Phiri set the record straight:
“It is important to clarify an article circulating on social media, suggesting that the Zimbabwe embassy in South Africa will provide transport to Zimbabwe nationals who wish to cast their votes on August 23 2023.”
He further emphasised that at no time during any media interview did he make any commitment regarding providing transportation for potential voters.
Phiri explained that the media’s inquiry focused on the government’s efforts to assist the Boksburg gas leak tragedy victims, where four family members tragically lost their lives.
The assistance provided by the government was specifically directed to support the bereaved family, and the deceased was laid to rest with dignity on July 15, 2023, in Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwean diplomat reiterated that the government has no plans to offer transportation to Zimbabwe to vote in the upcoming elections.
