Youth taught about cleanliness at Phomolong clean-up campaign
Mamelodi youth were encouraged to keep their communities clean at all times during a recent “Clean Up Mamelodi” initiative led by the members of Mams Skate Club on Sunday.
Organiser Poelo Mofolo said this was more than just a campaign – it’s a movement toward a cleaner, greener Mamelodi and a healthier planet.
He said: “Our team rallied together for a powerful clean-up event in the Phomolong informal settlement in Mamelodi East, marking our second major clean-up campaign of the year.
“Our mission is to join the global effort to protect our ecosystem by reducing litter and improving our natural spaces,” said Mofolo.
“Despite the challenges we face, such as a lack of essential equipment and protective gear, our commitment remains unwavering.
“We aim to inspire the youth of Mamelodi to join us in the fight against illegal dumping.”
The youth, together with the community of Phomolong, brought their own garden tools to help clean the identified spots turned into illegal dumping sites.
He pleaded with residents to keep it clean, love their environment, and not throw rubbish anywhere.
“We are calling on the municipality and local officials to partner with grassroots programmes like ours as we work to address the pressing issue of illegal dumping, especially in under-resourced areas like Phomolong Extension 5, where municipal services are limited.
“Through our actions, we aim to inspire the youth of Mamelodi to join us in the fight against illegal dumping,” said Mofolo.
The health of the people residing near the dumping sites was at risk from all the rubbish.
“The aim of the clean-up campaign was to prevent any health outbreaks caused by illegal dumping as well as educate the youth about living in a healthy environment.”
“Together, we can create a cleaner, more sustainable community,” Mofolo concluded.
