Women’s Heritage Monument Faces Delays and Structural Issues

Women's Living Heritage Monument still not open

The Women’s Living Heritage Monument, intended to be a symbol of pride and a tribute to the accomplishments of women, remains shuttered, plagued by structural issues that have persisted for several years.

In a recent oversight inspection, the DA discovered that the monument’s condition has not improved since their visit last year. Leaking toilets, a compromised roof, cracked walls, and an overgrown courtyard have marred the site’s potential.

Wildri Peach, the DA’s Gauteng spokesperson for Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation (SACR), expressed disappointment. He stated, “Instead of fixing the shoddy work, the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR) has installed a new art incubator, which remains empty.”

Operational issues have long plagued the site, including non-functional fire hydrants, unfinished floors, roof leaks, non-operational lifts, improper fire exits, and no provisions for people with disabilities. These challenges have prevented the monument from fulfilling its purpose.

The project was completed during the 2019/2020 financial year, yet it has never received an occupancy certificate. Structural deficiencies, leaks, and issues with the fire suppression system have hindered its handover to the metro.

Peach emphasised the untapped potential of the monument, stating, “This monument has a huge potential to attract tourists and bring local and international investment, creating job opportunities for unemployed Tshwane residents.”

The Gauteng Department had allocated over R300 million to the monument the previous year. However, updated expenditure figures were not available during the oversight.

The department has not responded as of this publication. This delayed response leaves questions about when the monument will finally open its doors to the public.
