Witfield Dam Hyacinth Successfully Eliminated

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Environmental Resource and Waste Management Department has successfully eliminated the hyacinth infestation that plagued Witfield Dam for more than three years. The removal operation, initiated in July and completed in September, has received praise from Ward 33 councillor Ashley Hoods.

While the dam is now free of hyacinth, work remains to clear the hyacinth from the dam’s banks. The removal team is awaiting the hyacinth to dry out, as transportation of wet hyacinths is regulated by law. Companies are also expressing interest in using hyacinth as a biomaterial for various purposes.

The return of birds and wildlife to the area has been a positive sign, and Hoods is optimistic about residents being able to enjoy the recreational facility, especially as the festive season approaches. However, challenges persist, such as overgrown grass and litter at the dam, as the metro lacks the necessary budget for adequate maintenance. Hoods also warn against the dumping of waste into the stormwater system, as it can lead to blockages and potential flooding. A response from the metro is pending.
