The Water Community Action Network (WaterCAN), an initiative of Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa), has called for accountability from Johannesburg and Rand Water regarding the ongoing water shortages plaguing residents in Johannesburg and Tshwane. SABC News reports that in recent weeks, both metros have experienced frequent interruptions in water supply due to critically low levels in their reservoirs. Despite authorities’ reports of progress in reservoir recovery, some areas in Gauteng are still without a reliable water supply.

Dr. Ferrial Adam, the Executive Manager of WaterCAN, attributes the water crisis to poor leadership and the lack of maintenance of essential infrastructure. She emphasized the dire nature of the water situation and the need for cooperation among local government, provincial and national authorities, and the affected citizens to find solutions. Adam also expressed concern about decisions made without proper consultation, leaving communities uninformed and frustrated.

WaterCAN advocates for transparency, collaboration, and a concerted effort to address the pressing water challenges that residents face in the region.
