Water wastage in Bedfordview and Edenvale

Water wastage in Bedfordview and Edenvale is causing significant concerns for the City of Ekurhuleni, with officials revealing that the City has lost 29% of their system input volume due to ongoing leaks. According to the CoE, Rand Water meter RW1974 via a 400mm pipe supplies these areas, the central reservoir in Edenvale and the direct supply zone through two pressure-reducing valves (PRVs) of 250mm and 300mm diameter.

Unfortunately, the water network in the area is more than 50 years old and consists of steel pipes, which are prone to corrosion and result in higher leakages, said the metro’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini. Increased pressure also exacerbates the situation. While the turnaround time for reported leaks is supposed to be 48 hours, this is not always the case.

Dlamini further explained that the long-term plan is to replace the network with more durable material. Still, the current objective is to reduce leakages and the number of burst pipes through pressure management. Unfortunately, Rand Water is struggling to meet the current demand. As a result, there is always a fluctuation in system pressure which usually increases the number of burst pipes. Therefore, prioritising pressure management has become a necessity.

In the meantime, officials are urging residents in Bedfordview and Edenvale to play their part in reducing water usage to help alleviate the pressure on the system. Furthermore, they ask residents to report any water leaks they see to their municipality to ensure prompt repairs.

The CoE recognises that the ongoing water wastage in Bedfordview and Edenvale has resulted in significant water wastage, and they are committed to finding a sustainable solution. They hope to reduce water loss through leaks and burst pipes with pressure management and better network infrastructure.
