Water supply issues in Johannesburg

Water supply issues in Johannesburg have left many residents frustrated and inconvenienced. While Johannesburg Water has attributed these problems to high water consumption and increased demand, water expert Anthony Turton suggests that the blame should not be solely on the public.

According to EWN, Turton emphasises that these recent water shortages in Johannesburg indicate a deeper-rooted problem: the municipality’s hesitance to invest in and develop essential water infrastructure. According to Turton, the signs of a potential infrastructure breakdown were evident, but Johannesburg Water failed to take proactive measures.

The consequences of these shortcomings are tangible, with residents in various parts of the city relying on water tankers while facing dry taps in other areas. Turton’s assessment underscores the need for a more comprehensive approach to address water supply challenges. It stresses the importance of infrastructure development to meet the growing demand in Johannesburg.
