The Eersterust Wall of Fame, a wall of plaques commemorating notable individuals, will soon be part of the exhibits at the Tshwane Mini Heritage Exhibition Hall.

According to the co-ordinator of the project, Casper “Bicks” Jeftha, “the wall will be a display of individuals and their list of achievements to mark their recognition in their own community of Eersterust”.

There will also be commemorative plaques of community members who passed away under tragic circumstances.

Some of the names that will be featured, according to Jeftha, are:

– Casper Bicks Jeftha: The winner of the Golden Shield Heritage Award 2016
– M. Doms: First female mayor in the new democratic South Africa (1997 – 1999)
– William Louw and Louis Malan: They were sent to represent South Africa in the World Boy Scouts Jamboree in Lillehammer, Norway
– Father David Marupen, Lynn Volkwyn, Jane Whitecliff and Lillian Daniels for establishing Circle of Life and Each (the hospice in Eersterust)
– Dorothy Magardie: Principal at the Eersterust Secondary School who was in that capacity for 10 years
– Ingle “Jinx” Singh: A prolific skilled soccer player and a master tactician. He managed the U/17 South African soccer team in 1999.
– Marcel Winkler: She was selected for the Olympic Games. She won silver medals in 100m and 200m in 1992 at the Africa Championships in Mauritius.
– Maria Kelly: She was one of the women who marched to the Union Building against the Pass Laws in 1953.

Commemoration plaques would also be dedicated to:

– The Sundowns supporters who passed away on 13 August 1967 in a road accident on their way to a game in Krugersdorp: Angela Lewis, Beryl Lewis, Beatrice Holworthy, Rhoda Salie, Katie (Jeftha) Hartell, Jubeida Leyds, Sheila Leyds, Vincent Lewis, Charles Roux, Harold Fisher and the sole survivor: Owen Hartze

– The Golden Girls: Zenny Martins, Dephnie Roberts, Rachel Patrick, Mary Patrick, Azzy Anderson, Kolla, surname to be verified, who died in an accident on April 19, 2009 as well as survivors Tilly Jacobus, Mary Ollier, Z. Anderson and Francis Ketriers.

Jeftha has called on the community of Eersterust to advise him of any other name that they would like to add to the list so that plaques can be made timeously for the unveiling of the wall at the Tshwane Mini Heritage Exhibition Centre on the corner of Fourie and Dove streets.

He also invited members of the public to the opening and unveiling of the wall on October 26 at 17:00. Admission is R30, which will include a meal and seating.

Nominations for the Wall of Fame must be forwarded before October 20 to Jeftha at [email protected]. For more details contact Jeftha on 064 705 1104.

A nomination must include a name, surname and the reason for the nomination.
