Volunteers sought to enrich lives of elderly at House Hermon Residentia
As the chilly grip of winter recedes and the warmth of summer approaches, House Hermon Residentia in Pretoria North is preparing for a seasonal shift that promises both challenges and opportunities.
The facility is calling for volunteers to play a crucial role in enhancing the lives of its elderly residents during this transitional period.
House Hermon manager Lize Strauss said with winter’s end, the facility’s north-facing rooms, which have provided a cosy retreat during the colder months, will soon face the challenges of summer heat.
“To combat this, we will appreciate working fans to help keep the indoor environment comfortable.”
Volunteers are also needed to assist with outdoor preparations, including tending to the gardens and making the veranda a pleasant space for residents who enjoy spending time outside,” said Strauss.
Strauss mentioned that the arrival of warmer weather typically uplifts the spirits of elderly residents, who relish the opportunity to be more active in the sun.
She said this increased optimism, however, brings its own set of needs.
“Volunteers can support this transition by engaging residents in activities, such as reading or playing games, and by contributing to the facility’s overall atmosphere of care and community.”
Among the many volunteer opportunities available, participants can join ongoing projects like the garden enhancement.”
She said those with a passion for gardening can help cultivate the facility’s outdoor spaces, creating a vibrant and inviting environment for residents.
House Hermon is also gearing up for special events, including a Protea paper folding workshop scheduled for September 20.
“Residents are invited to assist with this creative activity, helping residents with fine motor skills and fostering a sense of achievement and enjoyment,” she said.
In addition to these activities, the facility needs support for several maintenance projects.
Volunteers with skills in plumbing, tiling, or painting, as well as those who can provide materials or labour, are encouraged to get involved.”
Strauss said the bathrooms and some areas of the facility require updates, and supplies such as tiles, pipes, and paint would be greatly appreciated.
Prospective volunteers are invited to visit the facility, complete a basic questionnaire, and familiarise themselves with House Hermon’s operations.
“The role of volunteers extends beyond mere assistance; it involves bringing compassion, empathy, and a willingness to engage with residents on a personal level.
Past volunteers have made notable contributions through activities like music therapy and book reading, which have been instrumental in maintaining residents’ cognitive functions and emotional well-being. The facility hopes to continue this tradition of positive impact with the help of new volunteers.
