Verskeie Pretoria-skole pluk eersdaags vrugte van skenkings
After addressing the damages caused by the fires in Cullinan and Pretoria East, the non-profit community organization Kamcare aims to donate more than 70 citrus trees to 31 preschools.
Spokesperson Alwine Strauss stated that veld fires in the last week of September caused significant damage.
Nine houses in the organization’s service area were also affected by the fires, preventing them from gaining momentum with vegetable garden projects due to immediate needs that must be addressed.
Strauss mentioned that the donation is part of their development programs.
Kamcare is a non-profit organization aimed at supporting communities with sufficient education and development.
Strauss and her colleague, Kamcare manager Liezel Landman, intend to offer a joint workshop for the schools where the trees will be distributed.
Kamcare’s horticulturalist, Karabo Mahlangu, will then provide a demonstration of how and where the plants should be planted.
“We are excited about the trees because they can make a sustainable difference in our communities where fresh fruits are often too expensive to obtain,” explained Strauss.
With a financial contribution from SPAR, the radio station GROOTFm 90.5 initiated the purchase of 71 mixed citrus trees at Plantland/Malanseuns.
The trees, along with a gift pack of fertilizers and bone meal, will be delivered to Kamcare and Laerskool Hermanstad in Pretoria West.
Laerskool Hermanstad has had a very successful vegetable tunnel and cultivation project in the past year, from which they are now literally and figuratively reaping the vegetables and fruits, teaching students how to ensure sustainable food provision.
Landman mentioned that children in Cullinan struggle with schoolwork. Consequently, they became aware of the need to start working with children at an early age to optimally develop them for school readiness.
Kamcare primarily operates in Refilwe and Pretoria East, where they empower 136 teachers from the community to educate nearly 1,060 preschoolers.
The Kamcare team focuses on the training of preschool teachers, vegetable garden training for sustainable food security, provision of educational crates with educational toys and writing supplies, as well as the regular refurbishment of these 31 preschools.
Three other schools – Uitsig Primary in Centurion, Die Heuwel Primary in Pretoria West, and Emasangweni Primary School in Mamelodi – also benefited from the radio station’s project and an organization addressing citizen projects, Empowervate.
Each school received a large gift pack of garden products specifically focused on vegetable gardens.
Sonet Stofberg, project coordinator of GROOTfm 90.5, stated that it is about much more than just donating a tree.
“It’s about restoring an environment that, along with its community, is struggling under constant challenges.”
Donations to Kamcare to alleviate the needs of fire victims in the Cullinan area and Pretoria East in the Cullinan and Kameeldrift areas can be arranged by contacting Liezel Landman at Kamcare: 072 150 3994.
