The Venetia mineworkers crash near Musina, Limpopo, has claimed the lives of twenty-two individuals en route to the De Beers-owned mine. According to EWN, the accident occurred Sunday evening when the miners’ bus collided head-on with a truck on the R572.

Identifying the victims has proven challenging and heart-wrenching, as many miners perished in the crash and subsequent fire, leaving them unrecognisable at the scene. However, on Tuesday morning, officials will begin the painstaking task of identifying the bodies.

Florence Radzilani, the MEC for Transport in Limpopo, expressed her condolences and eagerly awaited a comprehensive report on the incident. She emphasised the importance of understanding the precise cause of the crash.

Vongani Chauke, a Limpopo Department of Transport spokesperson, addressed the ongoing speculation regarding the crash’s cause. He stressed the need to avoid making assumptions and highlighted the ongoing investigation.

Chauke also revealed that the workers at the Venetia mine, undoubtedly shaken by this tragedy, would be provided with trauma counselling throughout the week.

The incident has left the mining community and the entire region in mourning, underscoring the importance of stringent safety measures and regular transport inspections in industries that rely on the daily commute of their workers.
