Usindiso Building Fire Inquiry Suggests Death Toll Could Be 76, Not 77
The Usindiso building fire inquiry has disclosed that preliminary investigations indicate the death toll in the tragic blaze may stand at 76 rather than the previously reported 77.
In August, one of the deadliest fires engulfed a five-storey building in Marshalltown, claiming numerous lives, injuring around 50 individuals, and displacing hundreds, according to EWN.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi established a commission inquiry chaired by Justice Sisi Khampepe to investigate the precise cause of the tragedy.
After several delays in its commencement, the inquiry held a briefing in Parktown to update the public on its readiness.
Public hearings in the Commission of Inquiry into the Usindiso building fire will begin next Thursday, during which evidence will be presented before the presiding officers.

In the initial stages, the commission will review information indicating that the death toll in the fatal blaze may be 76, not 77.
Speaking during the briefing, the commission’s spokesperson, Thulani Makhubela, stated that the commission’s investigation will determine the final number of fatalities.
Makhubela explained, “There could have been a limb found in the building, which was assumed to belong to somebody else, potentially victim number 77. However, after thorough investigations, it may actually have belonged to one of the 76.”
He emphasised that the death toll could only be officially revised after the evidence was presented before Justice Khampepe.
