A portion of Eldoraigne has been enduring a power outage for six days due to delayed repairs in the area. The outage began on Saturday, July 22, and while two-thirds of properties had their supply restored by Sunday afternoon, the remaining streets have continued to be without power. The ongoing wildcat strikes and municipal worker protest action in Centurion have hampered the restoration efforts, exacerbating the situation.

The outage has affected the community, with residents expressing frustration and concerns regarding food loss. The impact has been significant, especially for elderly residents who struggle without the power to cook and bathe.

Ward Councillor Cindy Billson highlighted the challenges faced during the repair process. Workers were blocked from leaving the depot on Tuesday, hindering efforts to fix the two remaining components responsible for the outage. A break in the electricity flow from the Eldoraigne substation, with a fault at the corner of Rabie Road and Van der Merwe Avenue, and an “abnormality” at the corner of Piet Hugo Street and Ruimte Road, have contributed to the ongoing issue. In response to difficulties at the depot, assistance is being sought from another region.

Billson expressed concern for the residents, especially regarding the loss of food and appliances due to the outage. Despite her efforts to gather information from the electricity department, she reported receiving no feedback on the progress of the resolution.

However, amidst the challenges, the community spirit has shone through. Residents with access to power have offered their support to those without. Isa van Aardt, a resident in the upper section of Van der Merwe Avenue, extended a helping hand by providing charging for devices, showers and even inviting community members to enjoy a hot coffee or tea.

Other residents also assisted anonymously, offering their generator to help wash clothing, especially for families with babies or kids.

Candice Naude highlighted the support and kindness shown within the community during this trying time. A fellow resident offered gas bottles and hot showers, allowing her to have her first hot shower since the outage began. She has managed to bathe her son using hot water from her workplace, appreciating the strength of a united and caring community.

Despite the frustrations caused by the power outage, the article emphasises the resilience and unity of the Eldoraigne community as they stand together and support one another during this challenging period.
