Union Worried About Tshwane's Use of Workers' 13th Cheques

The Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) has accused the City of Tshwane of using a strategy to encourage employees to resign or take early retirement to address its debt problems.

This comes after the city decided to stagger employees’ Christmas bonuses totalling R565 million. Imatu argued that this decision amounted to a breach of contract and undermined the union consultation process.

The city defended its decision, stating that liquidity challenges and revenue collection issues necessitated the bonus stagger. Imatu warned that such measures would demotivate employees and drive them to leave the city’s workforce.
