Initial investigations suggest that cable theft and vandalism sparked the fire, with a cable connecting the Braamfontein and Fordsburg substations affected. Tools typically used for theft and vandalism, along with a cellphone, were found at the site. As a result, areas including Braamfontein, Newtown, and Parktown remain without electricity.
City Power spokesperson Issac Mangena explained that assessments will guide repair and restoration efforts. Technicians also explore alternative solutions to restore power to affected areas through nearby substations.
