Willie Matjie, driven to provide job opportunities for young people in the Diepsloot and Fourways areas, established the non-profit organisation Umoja Simunye. His mission is to empower youth and steer them away from the dangers of street life, particularly drug abuse.

The fate of youngsters deeply moved Matjie. Despite completing their matriculation, they found themselves trapped by substance abuse. He identified the lack of work opportunities as a significant contributing factor to this problem.

He took action through his youth empowerment project under Umoja Simunye. One notable endeavour involved assisting Bongani Maringa in opening his carwash, aptly named Bongz, on September 23. This initiative was fueled by Matjie’s genuine concern and funded from his pocket.

“Bongani dropped out of school, and I used to see him on the street washing other people’s cars, including mine. He often asked for help in finding employment as I drove by. Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t secure a job for him, not even as a gardener. That’s why I decided to support him,” Matjie explained.

He emphasised the importance of seizing opportunities to improve one’s circumstances. He highlighted the carwash as a valuable venture to occupy individuals in need. The income generated from such businesses can help those seeking work cover transportation costs when pursuing job opportunities.

Matjie’s commitment to getting young people off the streets extends beyond carwash enterprises. He actively encourages and supports various business ideas, such as baking and vegetable vending, by assisting with initial stock procurement. His overarching goal is to ensure that young people stay productive while waiting for potential job offers rather than remaining idle.

The community’s positive response to his first project over the weekend has filled Matjie with hope. He plans to launch additional initiatives in Fourways, with aspirations of expanding Umoja Simunye’s impact nationwide. Through these efforts, Willie Matjie and Umoja Simunye are making significant strides in empowering youth and fostering opportunities for a brighter future.
