Uber’s Courier Bakkie: Revolutionizing Heavy Deliveries in South Africa

Published

on

Uber has partnered with fleet partners like SkyNet Worldwide Express, one of South Africa's largest courier companies who bring decades of logistics expertise to the Courier Bakkie service.

Uber South Africa has introduced an innovative new service, Courier Bakkie, allowing users to request the delivery of heavy items weighing up to 1 tonne. This groundbreaking addition makes South Africa the first market globally to experience this unique e-hailing service.

Johannesburg leads the way
The Courier Bakkie service is initially rolling out in Johannesburg, with plans to expand to Cape Town and Durban soon. The offering is ideal for transporting large items like furniture, appliances, or even catering supplies, especially as the festive season approaches.

To streamline its services, Uber is rebranding its existing “Uber Package” option to “Courier.” This aligns with the platform’s growing suite of offerings and enhances user experience.

Courier Bakkie is not just for personal use. It aims to support small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) by simplifying logistics and eliminating the need for businesses to invest in delivery fleets. Drivers also benefit from increased income opportunities by participating in this new service.

Mnotho Mtshali, Senior Operations Manager for Uber Middle East and Africa, emphasized the significance of the launch:
“South Africans love their bakkies because they are practical and versatile. Courier Bakkie is a game-changer for both businesses and individuals, providing convenience and creating essential jobs.”

With the holidays around the corner, Courier Bakkie is expected to ease the transportation of goods for celebrations and gatherings, offering a practical solution to users’ heavy delivery needs.

Uber continues to redefine urban mobility with innovative solutions like Courier Bakkie, catering to both personal and business logistics in South Africa.
