Two statues unveiled to honour Madiba

President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled two statues of former President Nelson Mandela. One is in Mthatha, and the other is in Qunu in the Eastern Cape. According to SAPeople, the two statues were unveiled on Mandela Day to honour Madiba and serve as a tribute to his enduring impact on South Africa and the world. They commemorate the 67 years he dedicated to the fight against apartheid and racism.

During the unveiling of the statue in Qunu, President Ramaphosa expressed the significance of honouring Nelson Mandela at his birthplace. He highlighted that while numerous monuments are paying tribute to Madiba across South Africa and the world, being able to honour the father of the nation in his place of birth holds great meaning for South Africans.

The President emphasised that creating these statues has been a long-standing effort by the government. Since 2021, the Eastern Cape Provincial Heritage Resource Agency, the Mandela family, the Nelson Mandela Museum, and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture have been driving the process, which included public consultation.

The statue in Mthatha depicts Madiba in his most well-known role as a statesman. In contrast, the statue in Qunu portrays him in the attire of his Xhosa-Tembu culture, symbolising the traditional values that shaped his consciousness.

President Ramaphosa hoped these statues would inspire others, particularly young people. He emphasised that anyone can achieve greatness despite one’s background or circumstances. Everyone has to contribute to improving society.

The President highlighted that the statues are beacons of hope for individuals and communities still facing marginalisation, poverty, inequality, and underdevelopment. He emphasised the role of monuments, statues, and museums in recognising those who have fought for universal ideals such as human freedom.

President Ramaphosa called on the people of Qunu to protect and preserve the sites of memorialisation and commemoration, as they have the potential to attract tourists and support local businesses and job creation.

The President encouraged all South Africans to dedicate 67 minutes to performing acts of goodwill towards others. He emphasised the importance of building bridges of peace and fighting against social injustice and oppression, just as Madiba did.
