Police have detained two individuals in Mamelodi East this week on suspicion of extorting money from local residents. The suspects, aged between 33 and 46, were apprehended on October 1 and are scheduled to appear in court on October 3 to face charges of assault and extortion.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the suspects are allegedly linked to an assault case reported in September, where the victim was reportedly assaulted with sjamboks for failing to pay a protection fee.

During the arrest, law enforcement officers discovered the two suspects in possession of two register files and an undisclosed sum of money.

Nevhuhulwi has encouraged individuals who have been subjected to extortion to report such incidents to their nearest police station. “Victims of extortion are urged to step forward and lodge formal complaints,” Nevhuhulwi stated.

“The police, in collaboration with crime intelligence resources, will maintain efforts to carry out operations targeting extortion activities in affected areas within the Tshwane district,” she added.
