Local ward councillor Jacqui Uys has called on Tshwane metro residents to remain patient amid an employee protest, resulting in service delivery delays and disruptions to essential services. The protest concerns an impasse between the employees and the municipality over salary increases.

Earlier in the year, the DA, in collaboration with coalition partners, approved a budget to stabilise the city’s finances. Tough decisions, including budget cuts, were necessary to achieve financial stability. One such decision involved not supporting salary increases for City of Tshwane workers and politicians. Councillor Uys emphasised that these problematic choices were essential to prevent a financial collapse and to set Tshwane back on track for a better future.

During the protest, community members are encouraged to escalate their service delivery complaints to MMC Wakelin. Mayor Cilliers Brink is scheduled to meet with Samwu leadership to address the impasse. However, Ward 59 councillor Shaun Wilkinson warned of the likelihood of further service delivery delays, particularly in waste collection, water supply, and electricity, with streetlights still needing to be addressed at this stage. Councillors are committed to closely collaborating with regional management and the mayor’s office on all significant issues.

Human settlement MMC Ofentse Madzebatela also engaged with Region 2 residents regarding the service delivery delays. He assured residents that they were actively managing the situation and seeking solutions. Residents who volunteered to help with street cleaning were acknowledged, and ward councillor Arnold van Niekerk disseminated information on proper refuse disposal.

Overall, the ongoing employee protest and its repercussions on service delivery have prompted concerted efforts from council members to address the situation and secure the well-being of Tshwane’s residents.
