Tshwane cannot grant wage hikes

Tshwane cannot grant wage hikes, says Mayor Cilliers Brink, shedding light on the ongoing challenges faced by the City, affirmed on Monday. Jacaranda FM reports that he addressed the City’s struggles in delivering essential services to residents due to the strike by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu).

The strike commenced in July and has notably resulted in delayed responses to power outages, water supply disruptions, and a halt in refuse removal services. As the City operates with a limited workforce, residents have been bearing the consequences of the strike’s impact on daily life.

Central to the dispute are issues raised by the municipal workers, particularly concerning the non-payment of salary increases. Samwu members are demanding salary hikes of 3.5% and 5.4%, figures Brink highlighted as unfeasible given the current financial circumstances of the City.

Brink conveyed, “We simply could not budget for salary increases for officials and councilors for this financial year. We are applying to the bargaining council to get exemption, we are going to explain our financial situation. We would like to give financial increases in the future, we are just not in a position to give it now.”
