Treasury Extends Closing Date for Eskom's Debt Relief Programme

National Treasury has pushed back the closing date for the Eskom municipal debt relief programme to October 31. Initially slated to conclude in September, this extension aims to provide municipalities with additional time to submit their debt relief applications as reported by Eyewitness News.

Amidst a nationwide energy crisis, municipalities collectively owe Eskom a staggering R64 billion. Despite 136 municipalities carrying these debts, only 37 have applied for the National Treasury’s debt relief assistance. Presently, just 27 of them meet the necessary criteria to participate in the effort to stabilise Eskom’s financial health.

National Treasury emphasises the importance of qualifying municipalities taking advantage of the debt relief program, as it stands as the sole viable solution to address their Eskom obligations.
