Transport Month Reminder Show Consideration for Cyclists

During Transport Month in October, Bedfordview Edenvale News interviewed the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to discuss road safety concerning cyclists.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane emphasised that cyclists are considered vulnerable road users and should be protected. He urged motorists to respect cyclists’ rights to share the road and called for responsible road-sharing practices.

Zwane noted that cyclist fatalities account for 1.4% of road deaths nationally, although specific figures for Ekurhuleni were unavailable due to the relatively small but significant numbers.

To address road safety concerns, RTMC conducts awareness campaigns, engages with motorists in high-risk areas, and deploys traffic officers daily to ensure safe driving practices. These measures are intensified during Transport Month to reduce road fatalities.

The RTMC also focuses on educating road users about the impact of their conduct on vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. Pedestrians and cyclists constitute the highest percentage of road fatalities, accounting for 43% of all road-related deaths.

To combat drunk driving, a common cause of fatalities, the RTMC has implemented evidential alcohol testing. Additionally, they use number plate recognition technology to identify and address errant motorists.

Zwane highlighted that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has established mechanisms for reporting unsafe road conditions to assist road users.

The RTMC is committed to collaborating with various groups to promote road safety and save lives.
