Three officers received four years imprisonment for bribery. The Pretoria specialised commercial crimes court sentenced these officers, Johannes Tebogo Mpete (39), Lesiba Richard Mapela (43), and Matsobane Victor Kwanaite (41), after convicting them for soliciting a R3,000 bribe from a motorist during a stop-and-search operation in Mabopane on February 14, 2016.

The officers found a white powdery substance in the motorist’s car and demanded a bribe to avoid arrest. The complainant reported the incident, leading to the officers’ arrest in 2021. Despite their not-guilty pleas, the state prosecutor argued for direct imprisonment, emphasising their role as police officers responsible for upholding the law.
