Water Shortages Persist in Gauteng Hospitals, Despite Improvements

Three Gauteng hospital taps have run dry

Three Gauteng hospital taps have run dry. These hospitals are still grappling with water shortages despite recent efforts to address the issue. Over the weekend, taps ran dry at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child, Helen Joseph, and Pholosong hospitals. While the provincial Department of Health restored water at two of these facilities in Johannesburg, the problem persists at Pholosong, according to EWN.

Although an alternative water supply line in Brixton is helping Helen Joseph Hospital, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child and Pholosong hospitals continue to rely on roving water tankers to meet their water needs. Gauteng health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba stated, “You can say that the supply to the three facilities still is a challenge – even though the situation is much better than what it was in the past week.”

The ongoing supply interruptions are due to challenges faced by Rand Water and Joburg Water, according to the provincial health department. However, Rand Water’s Makenosi Maroo has countered this claim, asserting that there are no supply issues on their end. Maroo pointed to infrastructure failures leading to water leakages as a primary concern.

Efforts to resolve the water shortages in these critical healthcare facilities continue, with the situation improving but not fully resolved.
