Three Arrested for Illegal Possession of Elephant Tusks in Bruma

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Johannesburg unit, in collaboration with the K9 Johannesburg unit, conducted a successful operation on September 6, leading to the arrest of three suspects involved in illegally possessing elephant tusks in Bruma, Johannesburg.

The operation originated with credible information about a Nissan Almera suspected of transporting ivory tusks in the Bruma area. Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela reported, “Members of the Hawks and the K9 unit operationalised and followed up on the information. The vehicle fitting the description of the car was spotted by the members.”

Officers discovered two elephant ivory tusks on the back seat behind the driver. The three suspects were immediately arrested and detained.

They will appear in the Johannesburg Regional Court on September 8. They will face charges related to illegally possessing elephant tusks and contraventions of the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act (NEMBA).
