In a momentous turn of events, Thembinkosi Lorch, a well-known football player for Orlando Pirates, has been found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Nokuthula Mathithibala, in 2020. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday, 6th June 2023, at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. Lorch has been convicted on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, shedding light on a distressing incident that unfolded between the former couple as reported by iReport South Africa.

According to Mathithibala’s testimony, Lorch attacked her after she questioned him about his whereabouts during a six-hour absence, leaving her alone at his residence. Allegedly, Lorch slapped and choked her while restraining her. To compound her distress, he took the car she was driving and left with his friends, leaving her stranded and vulnerable.

This distressing incident was not Lorch’s first instance of violence inflicted upon Mathithibala. She disclosed that it was the third time she had endured such abuse, but she had refrained from reporting the previous incidents to protect Lorch’s career.

Lorch vehemently denied the allegations against him, questioning Mathithibala’s credibility as a witness. The court has scheduled 28th July as the sentencing date, where Lorch faces the possibility of a prison term or a monetary fine for his offence. The conviction of Lorch has sparked varied reactions among fans and social media users, with some condemning his actions. In contrast, others rally to his defence, underscoring the divisive nature of the case.

The conviction of Thembinkosi Lorch not only signifies a significant legal development but also brings attention to the broader issue of domestic violence and its impact on victims. This case serves as a reminder that no one should be exempt from facing the consequences of their harmful actions regardless of their status or profession. The sentencing outcome will further emphasise the importance of addressing violence against women and fostering a society that prioritises the safety and well-being of all its members.
