The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton Campus recently hosted its annual student heritage festival, a celebration of the diverse cultural backgrounds represented within its student community.

Organized by the student experience team, consisting of the social committee, sports committee, career center, VC Cares, and VC Voice, the event provided an opportunity for students to exhibit and appreciate their distinct cultures and traditions.

The festival buzzed with enthusiasm as students curated display tables showcasing various cultures and countries, featuring traditional artifacts, interesting facts, and cuisine specific to each culture.

Attendees were encouraged to explore, taste the diverse foods, and gain insights into different customs.

While food and information were pivotal aspects of the event, music filled the atmosphere as students enjoyed a cultural entertainment segment, followed by a fashion show where participants modeled traditional attire to accentuate the beauty of cultural dress.

Highlighting the day was the competition for the best display table, fostering a mix of competitiveness and cooperation among participants.

Lehlogonolo Skosana, a third-year student pursuing the IIE’s Diploma in Sports Development and Management, alongside the sports committee, clinched the top spot with their compelling presentation.

Skosana expressed, “Securing the award for the best display table at this year’s heritage festival was more than a personal triumph for my team and me; it underscored the significance of unity and cultural expression.”

Skosana elaborated on how they brought the vibrant essence of Kasi to the forefront by featuring their distinctive lifestyle through an exhilarating Diski Tournament and offering traditional delicacies like the ‘kota’ and Coke, reminiscent of what fans enjoy at sports venues.

Anto Kagisho, the campus communications representative, echoed similar sentiments.

“The heritage festival embodies the celebration of diversity and the establishment of an inclusive environment where students can embrace their identities and heritage. It stands as a prominent event on our calendar, promoting unity while enabling students to express themselves in an engaging and meaningful manner.”
