The Husky Romi Wolf Sanctuary

The Husky Romi Wolf Sanctuary recently organised a fundraiser at the Big Red Barn in Centurion, drawing the support of locals eager to contribute to the well-being of the animals under the sanctuary’s care. This event served as a fundraiser and an opportunity to raise awareness about the sanctuary’s mission and the animals it provides a forever home to.

The sanctuary, named after its first resident husky, Romi, plays a crucial role in rescuing and caring for abandoned animals for various reasons, including emigration and hunting. Unlike many other organisations, the Husky Romi Wolf Sanctuary doesn’t breed or re-home animals; instead, it focuses on providing a loving and permanent home for them.

In collaboration with Adventure Trails, the event allowed over 100 attendees to participate in a run/walk, with the bonus of bringing their canine companions along. Afterwards, participants had the opportunity to meet three of the wolves living at the sanctuary. Rene Adendorff was announced as the lucky raffle winner during the event.

Erin Bayliss, the youth ambassador and soon-to-be virtual adoption director for the sanctuary, highlighted the diversity of animals in their care, which includes huskies, wolves, and hybrids. The sanctuary also has a policy of not turning away strays needing assistance.

Bayliss emphasised the importance of supporting animals that lack a voice to advocate for themselves. He stated, “All these animals have special stories, and I think that it’s cool to just support animals. They don’t have a voice, so I think that we need to be their voice and look after them because they can’t speak up for themselves.”

The Husky Romi Wolf Sanctuary is gearing up to relaunch its virtual adoption program, allowing individuals to sponsor a wolf for a year. Additionally, they have a tree-planting spring project in the works, furthering their commitment to the welfare of animals and the environment.
