The City of Tshwane has yet to appoint a mayor

The City of Tshwane has yet to appoint a mayor. This situation is because council speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana adjourned a special council sitting on Wednesday to seek a legal opinion on the status of Cope councillor Justice Sefanyetso. According to Sunday World, the decision came after Ndzwanana compared two conflicting letters from Cope leaders regarding Sefanyetso’s status. While one letter withdrew Sefanyetso as the party’s representative, the other confirmed his role as a Tshwane councillor.

The ANC members welcomed the adjournment. But DA-led multi-party coalition councillors refused to leave council chambers, arguing that the speaker’s reasons were not legally sound. Brian Mkhono, the spokesperson for Cope in Tshwane, blamed the party’s Johannesburg councillor Colleen Makhubele and party leader Mosiuoa Lekota for the confusion. He added that Sefanyetso had not been withdrawn as a councillor and had no criminal record.
