Bester and Magudumana Scheduled for First High Court Appearance Ahead of Trial
Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana will make their first High Court appearance in preparation for trial on Wednesday morning. Bester, a convicted killer and rapist, is set to stand trial along with his accomplice and seven other co-accused for his daring escape from the Mangaung private correctional facility in May 2022, according to EWN. Serving a life sentence at the time of his escape, Bester and Magudumana were apprehended while on the run in Tanzania last year.
Despite claims by Magudumana that she was forced to flee the country with Bester, the two have not been seen together in public since then. During the last court appearance in October, Magudumana did not enter the dock at the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court due to alleged ill health, leading to a controversial incident involving her arrest. While the State withdrew charges against three accused, leaving nine remaining, Bester has undergone legal representation changes, with Jan Loubser now leading his defence team.
Loubser announced plans to bolster the legal team with prominent lawyers such as advocates Dali Mpofu and Zandile Mshololo. State prosecutor Amanda Bester informed the court that the case was ready for a pre-trial conference in the High Court.
