Suspect arrested in connection with violent crimes held in custody

A suspect linked to multiple violent crimes, including attempted murder and business robbery, will remain in custody following his apprehension on September 16.

The arrest stems from incidents in Bedwang, specifically Lebotloane Village, in March last year.

In one of these attacks, a 55-year-old man was brutally shot twice in his upper body in Zone 3.

Police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said the victim survived and was discharged after receiving treatment at a local hospital.

A second incident involved a 25-year-old woman, who was threatened at gunpoint while working behind the counter of a store in Lebotloane Village.

The suspects made off with cash and energy drinks,” said Myburgh.

She said an extensive investigation led authorities to 30-year-old suspect Raymond Mokati, who was arrested at a bus terminal in Mabopane.

His first court appearance was on September 18.

Further inquiries into his past uncovered disturbing revelations, linking the suspect to a series of rape cases reported between 2018 and 2021 across the Gauteng province, including areas such as Rietgat, Olievenhoutbosch, Mmamethlake, and Soshanguve.

He is also linked to another business robbery in Bedwang.

The suspect was remanded in custody and is expected to reappear in the Temba Magistrate’s Court on October 4.
